MESSAGGIO DI NATALE 2021 DEL GRAN PRIORE ECCLESIASTICO DELL’ORDINE DI SAN LAZZARO DI GERUSALEMME

Eccellenze, confratelli e consorelle dell’Ordine Militare e Ospedaliero di San Lazzaro di Gerusalemme,

Il Natale di Gesù che ci apprestiamo a celebrare è la festa che ci dà la certezza di essere amati gratuitamente e per sempre.

Il mistero del Natale del Figlio di Dio, diventato “Figlio dell’uomo”, è il fondamento di un popolo di figli nel Figlio unigenito di Dio e, di conseguenza, un popolo di fratelli e sorelle, che camminano insieme sulla stessa strada verso la stessa meta.

Il Natale non è una festa statica di tranquillità, che possiamo vivere isolati davanti al camino di casa o davanti ad uno schermo che ci fa sperimentare relazioni virtuali, ma una festa che ci mette tutti in movimento e in discussione.

La nascita di Gesù avviene nella modalità più movimentata. Maria e Giuseppe si sono messi in cammino dalla loro casa di Nazaret verso Betlemme, dove si sono dovuti rifugiare in una stalla” perché per loro non c’era posto nell’alloggio” (Lc.2,7).

Con l’angelo che si presenta ai pastori c’è tutta una moltitudine delle schiere celesti che scendono dal cielo sulla terra per lodare Dio e annunciare a tutti che la gloria di Dio nei cieli si coniuga con la pace in terra per gli uomini amati dal Signore.

I pastori, i primi a ricevere l’annuncio della nascita del Salvatore e recarsi senza indugio verso Betlemme, provano una grande gioia quando trovano il Bambino adagiato in una mangiatoia.

I Magi si mettono insieme in cammino da Oriente a Gerusalemme per cercare il re dei Giudei che è nato. Si convertono dai loro studi, lasciano le loro terre e partono dietro a una stella e dopo varie traversie provano una grandissima gioia nel trovare in una casa semplice dell’umile cittadina di Betlemme il Re Bambino a cui offrono i loro preziosi doni: l’oro simbolo della regalità che si pone al servizio degli altri, l’incenso simbolo della divinità che manifesta la sua tenera paternità, la mirra simbolo della umanità sofferente. I Magi rappresentano quanti, da ogni parte della terra, si muovono alla ricerca di Colui che viene a dare senso alla vita e alla storia.

Alla grotta di Betlemme non si va da soli, ma insieme come i pastori, come i magi, come la moltitudine degli angeli. Noi cristiani non siamo camminatori solitari, ma membri del popolo di Dio, compagni di viaggio che camminano insieme agli altri nella gioia dell’incontro fraterno e nella condivisione della propria esperienza di fede.

Anche noi siamo chiamati in questo Natale ad abbandonare le nostre abitudini stanche e le nostre false sicurezze, a metterci in cammino tra di noi e con tutti oltre i confini delle nostre chiese e delle nostre case per raggiungere le donne e gli uomini, che, anche se provati, affaticati, smarriti per la pandemia e per drammi dell’esistenza, coltivano nel proprio cuore la passione per la ricerca della verità, la sete della giustizia, il desiderio di una felicità non effimera.

Noi cristiani, definiti fin dall’inizio “quelli della via” (cfr. At 9, 2), siamo chiamati ad incarnare il metodo di Dio, che cammina nella storia e condivide le vicende tristi e liete dell’umanità, seguendo Gesù Cristo, che è Via, Verità e Vita.

Il Natale sia per tutti noi un tempo di contemplazione nel silenzio adorante del mistero dell’Incarnazione, di incontro con Dio e con i fratelli e sorelle, di ascolto della Parola di Dio e delle parole degli uomini, di discernimento dei segni dei tempi, con l’attenzione concreta agli altri, ai più piccoli, agli ultimi, a coloro che non riescono a camminare come noi e con noi.

Tutti i membri dell’Ordine Ospedaliero di San Lazzaro siamo chiamati ad accogliere e servire Gesù Cristo nei malati, nei lebbrosi, nei piccoli, nei poveri, nei profughi, negli ultimi.

Regaliamo a Gesù nel suo compleanno la nostra testimonianza di vita gioiosa facendoci annunciatori e testimoni della buona notizia dell’amore misericordioso di Dio per tutti.

L’augurio che rivolgo a tutti è quello che ognuno accolga con una grande fede Gesù Cristo, il vero festeggiato, che rischiamo di dimenticare, abbagliati dalle luci artificiali e storditi dai rumori delle nostre città.

CHRISTMAS MESSAGE 2021 OF THE GRAND ECCLESIASTICAL PRIOR OF THE ORDER OF SAINT LAZARUS OF JERUSALEM

Your Excellencies, Brothers and Sisters of the Military and Hospitaller Order of St Lazarus of Jerusalem,

The Christmas of Jesus that we are about to celebrate is the feast that gives us the certainty of being loved gratuitously and forever.

The mystery of the Christmas of the Son of God, who became the „Son of Man“, is the foundation of a people of sons in the only Son of God and, consequently, a people of brothers and sisters, walking together on the same road towards the same goal.

Christmas is not a static feast of tranquillity, which we can live isolated in front of the fireplace at home or in front of a screen that lets us experience virtual relationships, but a feast that puts us all in motion and in discussion.

The birth of Jesus takes place in the most animated way. Mary and Joseph set out from their home in Nazareth towards Bethlehem, where they had to take refuge in a stable „because there was no room for them in the dwelling“ (Lk.2,7).

With the angel presenting himself to the shepherds there is a whole multitude of the heavenly hosts descending from heaven to earth to praise God and announce to all that the glory of God in heaven is combined with peace on earth for those loved by the Lord.

The shepherds, the first to receive the announcement of the Saviour’s birth and to go without delay to Bethlehem, feel great joy when they find the Child lying in a manger.

The Magi set out together from the East to Jerusalem to look for the King of the Jews who was born. They converted from their studies, left their lands and set off following a star. After various vicissitudes, they experienced great joy when they found the Child King in a simple house in the humble town of Bethlehem, to whom they offered their precious gifts: gold, the symbol of royalty at the service of others, incense, the symbol of divinity manifesting its tender paternity, and myrrh, the symbol of suffering humanity. The Magi represent all those who, from all parts of the world, are searching for the One who comes to give meaning to life and history.

We do not go to the grotto of Bethlehem alone, but together, like the shepherds, like the Magi, like the multitude of angels. We Christians are not solitary walkers, but members of God’s people, fellow travellers who walk together with others in the joy of fraternal encounter and in sharing our own experience of faith.

This Christmas we too are called to abandon our tired habits and our false security, to set out among ourselves and with everyone beyond the confines of our churches and our homes to reach out to the women and men who, even if tried, fatigued, lost because of the pandemic and the dramas of existence, cultivate in their hearts a passion for the search for truth, a thirst for justice, a desire for a non-permanent happiness.

We Christians, defined from the beginning as „those of the way“ (cf. Acts 9:2), are called to incarnate the method of God, who walks in history and shares the sad and happy events of humanity, following Jesus Christ, who is the Way, the Truth and the Life.

May Christmas be for all of us a time of contemplation in the adoring silence of the mystery of the Incarnation, of encounter with God and with our brothers and sisters, of listening to the Word of God and the words of men, of discerning the signs of the times, with concrete attention to others, to the least, to those who cannot walk like us and with us.

All the members of the Hospitaller Order of St Lazarus are called to welcome and serve Jesus Christ in the sick, the lepers, the little ones, the poor, the refugees, the last ones.

Let us give to Jesus on his birthday our witness of joyful life by being heralds and witnesses of the good news of God’s merciful love for all.

My wish for everyone is that each of us may welcome with great faith Jesus Christ, the true birthday boy, whom we risk forgetting, dazzled by artificial lights and stunned by the noise of our cities.
