I NOVANTA ANNI DELLA MODERNA PRESENZA LAZZARITA NEI PAESI BASSI

(Maurits Willem Raedinck van Vollenhoven, GCLJ-J, Gran Priore dei Paesi Bassi dell’Ordine di San Lazzaro)

Nel 1932 il diplomatico olandese a Madrid, Maurits Willem Raedinck van Vollenhoven, Signore di Kleverskerke, veniva nominato Gran Priore dei Paesi Bassi. Era sposato con la principessa Marie Christine de Borbón, parente dell’allora Luogotenente Generale e, poi, 44° Gran Maestro Don Francisco de Paula de Borbón y La Torre, IV Duca di Siviglia e Grande di Spagna, il quale nel 1935 gli conferì la Gran Croce dell’Ordine.

Il 29 aprile del 1938 veniva creata la fondazione „ATAVIS ET ARMIS“ all’Aia: mirava a „promuovere la salvezza della comunità nazionale olandese; rafforzare la coscienza nazionale promuovendo la conservazione della tradizione familiare; proteggere i valori spirituali e concedere sostegno in generale e concedere sostegno alla lotta contro le malattie della lebbra in particolare.

Nel 1964 i membri olandesi dell’Ordine di San Lazzaro, con sede a Parigi, fondarono il loro ramo olandese. Il Gran Priore van Vollenhoven ne fu uno dei promotori. L’anno successivo, durante una solenne cerimonia al castello di Moersbergen, vicino a Doorn, il Gran Priorato dei Paesi Bassi fu „reinstallato“ da quello che all’epoca ricopriva la carica di Grande Amministratore, il Duca di Brissac, il quale nel 1973, a seguito dello scisma tra il ramo spagnolo e quello francese, sarebbe diventato Gran Maestro dell’Obbedienza di Parigi. Questo Gran Priorato esiste ancora e, nel 2004, si è schierato con l’Obbedienza di Orleans, rifiutando l’unificazione delle due Obbedienze storiche (Malta e Parigi) conclusasi nel 2008 con l’elezione del 49° Gran Maestro Don Carlos Gereda de Borbon.

Nel frattempo, nel 1990, l’Obbedienza di Malta (spagnola) aveva istituito la Commenda dei Paesi Bassi, la cui inaugurazione ebbe luogo presso il castello di Rhoon. Essa rappresentò nei Paesi Bassi le due vecchie Obbedienze (Parigi e Malta) dopo il primo tentativo di unificazione del 1986. Le attività di carità furono affidate alla Fondazione Atavis et Armis che mirava a „curare l’organizzazione e l’amministrazione nei Paesi Bassi dell’Ordine Militare e Ospedaliero di San Lazzaro di Gerusalemme, così come la difesa della fede cristiana e la realizzazione della carità cristiana“ e che nel 1991 cambiò il proprio nome in “Fondazione dell’Obbedienza di malta”. L’Ordine, invece, rimase attivo nei Paesi Bassi con il nome di Ordine Militare ed Ospedaliero di San Lazzaro di Gerusalemme.

Tra il 1998 ed il 1999 furono create le due Commende Sint Willibrord e Sint Servaas, mentre la terza Commenda Holland en Zeeland è stata fondata nel 2021.

Dal 2018 quella che era la vecchia Commenda dei Paesi Bassi è diventata un Gran Baliato affidato al governo di una Dama dell’Ordine, Herma Johanna Wijers, nominata dal Gran Maestro Francisco de Borbón, Conte von Hardenberg, come Gran Balì del Gran Baliato dei Paesi Bassi.

THE NINETY YEARS OF THE MODERN LAZARITE PRESENCE IN THE NETHERLANDS

In 1932 the Dutch diplomat in Madrid, Maurits Willem Raedinck van Vollenhoven, Lord of Kleverskerke, was appointed Grand Prior of the Netherlands. He was married to Princess Marie Christine de Borbón, a relative of the then Lieutenant General and later 44th Grand Master Don Francisco de Paula de Borbón y La Torre, 4th Duke of Seville and Grand Master of Spain, who conferred the Grand Cross of the Order on him in 1935.

On 29 April 1938, the foundation ‚ATAVIS ET ARMIS‘ was created in The Hague: it aimed to ‚promote the salvation of the Dutch national community; strengthen national consciousness by promoting the preservation of family tradition; protect spiritual values in general and grant support for the fight against leprosy diseases in particular.

In 1964 the Dutch members of the Order of St. Lazarus, based in Paris, founded their Dutch branch. Grand Prior van Vollenhoven was one of the initiators. The following year, during a solemn ceremony at Moersbergen Castle, near Doorn, the Grand Priory of the Netherlands was „reinstalled“ by the then Grand Administrator, the Duke of Brissac, who in 1973, following the schism between the Spanish and French branches, would become Grand Master of the Obedience of Paris. This Grand Priory still exists and, in 2004, sided with the Orleans Obedience, refusing the unification of the two historic Obediences (Malta and Paris) which ended in 2008 with the election of the 49th Grand Master Don Carlos Gereda de Borbon.

In the meantime, in 1990, the Obedience of Malta (Spanish) had established the Commandery of the Netherlands, whose inauguration took place at Rhoon Castle. It represented the two old Obediences (Paris and Malta) in the Netherlands after the first attempt at unification in 1986. Charitable activities were entrusted to the Atavis et Armis Foundation, which aimed to „take care of the organisation and administration in the Netherlands of the Military and Hospitaller Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem, as well as the defence of the Christian faith and the realisation of Christian charity“ and which in 1991 changed its name to „Foundation of the Obedience of Malta“. The Order, however, remained active in the Netherlands under the name of the Military and Hospitaller Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem.

Between 1998 and 1999 the two Commendas Sint Willibrord and Sint Servaas were created, while the third Commenda Holland en Zeeland was founded in 2021.

Since 2018, the former Commandery of Holland has become a Grand Bailiwick under the government of a Dame of the Order, Herma Johanna Wijers, appointed by Grand Master Francisco de Borbón, Count von Hardenberg, as Grand Bailiff of the Grand Bailiwick of Holland.
